AMD AM5 Socket: CPUs, Chipsets, DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 Support
CPUs & Platforms · Updated · First published · By the Hardware Spec Index editors
AM5 is AMD's desktop socket introduced in September 2022 with the Ryzen 7000 series. It is an LGA1718 socket, so the pins are on the motherboard rather than the processor, and it supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 exclusively.
Key facts
| Socket | LGA1718 |
|---|---|
| Launched | September 2022 |
| Memory | DDR5 only, dual channel |
| CPU PCIe lanes | 28 × PCIe 5.0 (24 usable + 4 chipset link) |
| Chipsets | A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B850, X870, X870E |
| Max TDP / PPT | 170 W / 230 W |
| Cooler compatibility | Most AM4 coolers (same hole spacing) |
| Support commitment | New CPUs through at least 2027 (AMD) |
Processors
AM5 launched with Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4) and gained Ryzen 8000G APUs and Ryzen 9000 (Zen 5) processors in 2024. Most Ryzen 7000 and 9000 desktop processors include a small two-compute-unit integrated GPU, enough for display output and troubleshooting. AMD has publicly committed to supporting AM5 with new processors through at least 2027.
I/O
AM5 processors provide 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes: 16 for graphics, 8 for two M.2 NVMe drives, and 4 for the chipset link. Which of those run at PCIe 5.0 depends on the chipset and board design. Memory is dual-channel DDR5 only; there is no DDR4 support.
Coolers and power
AM5 keeps the AM4 cooler mounting hole layout, so most AM4 coolers that use the stock backplate fit without adapters. Desktop TDPs range from 65 W to 170 W, with package power tracking (PPT) limits of 88 W to 230 W.

Frequently asked questions
Does AM5 support DDR4?
No. AM5 processors only support DDR5 memory.
Do AM4 coolers fit AM5?
Most do. AM5 uses the same mounting hole spacing, so coolers that use the motherboard's stock backplate are compatible. Coolers with custom backplates may need an updated kit.
Do all AM5 CPUs have integrated graphics?
Most Ryzen 7000 and 9000 desktop CPUs include a basic 2-CU iGPU, but F-suffix models do not. Ryzen 8000G models have a much stronger integrated GPU.
Which AM5 chipset should I choose?
B650 or B850 covers most builds. Choose X870 or X870E if you need USB4, more PCIe 5.0 slots or extensive I/O.
How long will AM5 be supported?
AMD has said it will release AM5 processors through at least 2027.
